Setting Day: An Island Tradition for Lobster Fishers and Lobster Lovers 🦞

PEI Mutual

Every April, Islanders begin officially counting down the days to the most anticipated tradition of the year. No, it’s not the arrival of the Easter Bunny or Saint Nicholas, or even the summer solstice. Nope, we’re talking about something even bigger and better (unless you’re a kid, you might disagree). That is, of course, Setting Day!!

Setting Day is the first day our Island fishers can head out on the waters to set their lobster traps for the spring season, usually landing on or around May 1st. It’s a time-honoured tradition that goes back generations.

As the fishers sail out of harbours across PEI’s North Shore at sunrise, their boats packed high with traps,  family members, friends, and neighbours gather along the docks to wish them a safe, successful day and season. Sometimes, the sounds of a lone bagpiper or a few fiddlers pierce the salty air, mingling with clapping and whoops from the crowd gathered around. It’s a truly heartwarming tradition that seems to grow in popularity every year.

Inevitably, Setting Day is followed in short order by all manner of lobster feasting.  From family lobster boils to neighbourhood ‘dock’ parties and the opening of PEI’s famous lobster supper restaurants, May is chock-full of crustacean-centric events. Many heated debates inevitably arise as to whether North Shore or South Shore lobster is sweeter and the best way to cook a lobster (we’re firmly in the steaming camp!).

The revelry surrounding Setting Day extends well beyond our appetite for the delicious shellfish. At the heart of it all is our deeply shared respect for the fishing industry that has shaped our Island way of life – from our seascapes to our music, our traditions and our economy. That respect extends, of course, to all the fishers who continue to brave the waters to bring in the catches each season, while ensuring they adhere to the highest standards of sustainable fishing practices.

Everyone, from Islanders to visitors, chefs and restaurateurs, can play a part in supporting our lobster fishery. It’s as easy as ordering a few pounds of lobster from the local fish market (or the back of a pick-up truck) or booking a table at your favourite lobster eatery.  And if a tourist asks where to find the best lobster roll, make sure you list off at least three top contenders so they’ll be inclined to try them all!

We’ve been in business since 1885, and while the fishing industry has changed significantly over the last 140 years, many things remain the same. Fishers still work long hours and endure harsh weather. Their boats are still their most valuable asset, matched only by the value of their strong work ethic. Unpredictable storms and weather events are still the greatest risk to their livelihood and their lives. And, just like all those that came before them, today’s PEI fishers are passionate about protecting the waters they fish and bringing home the highest-quality lobster in the world.

Here at PEI Mutual, we’re wholeheartedly committed to supporting Island fishers in the best way we know how – by providing them with comprehensive insurance that offers peace of mind. Our fishing insurance covers a wide array of perils such as fire, theft, storms, collisions, and more. We’re grateful for the opportunity to play our part in supporting PEI fishers through our insurance products. Of course, our staff also love to show their support by enjoying the sweet flavours of PEI lobster throughout the season.

Here’s to Setting Day and spring lobster season on PEI – may the waters be still, the traps be full, and  the lobster meat always sweet.
