Follow these best practices to minimize fires and maintain safety:
Before Harvest
-
Plan Ahead: Start pre-harvest prep weeks early to order parts and schedule repairs.
-
Know your equipment: Refresh your knowledge of safety procedures and shut offs.
-
Inspect Thoroughly: Check belts, chains, shields, guards, and steering systems. Tighten loose bolts and repair leaks.
-
Clean the Machine: Remove oil, grease, dust, and any rodent or birds nests.
During Harvest
-
Clear Dust and Residue: Use a leaf blower or broom – recommended every 4-6 hours
-
Stay Fire-Ready: Keep fire extinguishers—One in the cab and optionally one more mounted on the exterior.
-
Cool Before Refueling: Shut off the engine and wait 10–15 minutes to reduce fire risk.
-
Watch Bearings & Belts: Heat and friction can ignite dry chaff.
-
Never Unplug While Running: Shut off power before clearing blockages.
Extra Field Tips
-
Remove rocks, stumps, and debris before harvest.
-
Allow extra turning space near ditches or power lines.
-
Adjust seats and controls for comfort—fatigue leads to accidents.
-
Keep ladders clear, use handrails, and keep clutter out of the cab.
